i did it. plug it in via usb as if you had software. open imovie or whatever movie editing software you have. In imovie if it is open and running when you plug in your sony handycam it should prompt you to extract the movie files. its pretty straight forward after that. this was done on a macbook pro and using a third gen sony handycam. there is another way to extract the files under the movie database in edit or import. this worked for me, best of luck.

unfortunately i could not find software to download for the mac OSX from the sony support site. i am hoping to try Thes117's suggestion. keeping my fingers crossed, because i recently purchased this mac book pro with a priority to transfer and keep all of my photos and videos on it.
